Stimulating, Engaging Student Activities and More Discussed at the Graduate Student Committee’s Third Meeting

Third Graduate Student Committee (GSC) meeting

Friday, December 2nd, 2022

For the third time, GSC members met after the national convention on Dec 2nd. Nooshin Esmaeili, GSC president, provided a brief overview of Montreal’s Convention in Aug 2022 and introduced 14 sites (universities) and the role of GSC and its responsibilities. Following that, a group discussion begins to discuss overall funding and plan for the coming year. GSC members suggested different stimulating and engaging activities for students, such as Common Integrative Seminars (CIS), which will be conducted by students. They also were interested in supporting co-publications of academic papers related to the partnership and travel complementary funds for participating PG national convention for the students who might not receive enough funds to travel. Photo or video competitions related to partnership projects, creating podcasts, or newsletters are also discussed. They also suggested having an exhibition at conventions for the student project related to the partnership. For example, a traveling installation that keeps evolving could be installed or replicated in each convention.

The members decided to meet five times a year. The next meeting will be held on January 19th followed by an in-person meeting in May 2023 at Calgary university. They also suggested creating social media pages such as LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook to increase awareness of the project and engage the general public. These platforms will align with project goals as they allow us to hear more voices. They also decided to create a Slack group for their internal communication. Trish Godoy-Contois, the indigenous student representative at GSC, also suggested some budget allocations for indigenous students to collocate more voices from the indigenous communities.
