Call for Abstracts: From Adaptive Reuse to Adaptive Architecture

Join us on May 21-22, 2026, for a groundbreaking conference exploring the shift From Adaptive Reuse to Adaptive Architecture. This international event, hosted by Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, invites papers that challenge and redefine the boundaries of architectural design, focusing on different ways to approach adaptability.

The following themes will be addressed at this international conference:

  • From single authorship to multi-authorship design
  • From a culture of deadlines to a culture of multiple beginning(s)
  • From a use culture (functionalism) to a culture of conversion
  • From (historical) architecture to (transhistorical) adaptability

Keynote Speakers include:

  • Sybil McKenna, Architect at EVOQ Architecture, known for her work on Ottawa’s Parliamentary Precinct.
  • Héctor Fernández Elorza, PhD, Lecturing Professor at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid ETSAM.
  • Rumiko Handa, Professor Emerita, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, expert in architectural theory and history.
  • Liliane Wong, Professor at Rhode Island School of Design, renowned for her work in adaptive reuse.

Submission Deadline: March 26, 2025
Submit a 300-word abstract (with 1-2 images) and a 100-word bio to: [email protected]
All submissions will be peer-reviewed, with decisions announced by mid-May 2025.

This call invites architects, historians, and scholars to explore how adaptive architecture can drive sustainability, inclusivity, and cultural preservation in the built environment.
