Community Engagement in Research

This seminar focused on community engagement in research. The presenters drew upon their practical experiences to discuss the philosophical underpinnings, key features, processes, practical strategies and ethical considerations in community-based research. They invited participants to engage in critical dialogues and explore strategies to reach out and meaningfully engage diverse community members in their collaborative research initiatives.

Hieu Van Ngo is an Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. He has led over 13 collaborative research projects addressing various community issues, such as youth gang violence and access of immigrant and racialized learners to equitable education and services.

Matt Patterson is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Calgary. His research focuses on the role of cultural planning and placemaking in cities. Currently he is studying how Chinatown communities across North America have adopted planning and placemaking strategies in an effort to preserve their neighbourhoods against gentrification, anti-Asian racism, and other threats.

Yeonjung Lee is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. Her research focuses on how to improve the quality of life for older adults, and she has established several research program in caregiving, home care, and aging in place/community.
