Quality in Canada’s Built Environment from Research to Action:Roadmaps to Equity, Social Value, and Sustainability

In August 2024, Canadian Architect magazine featured an article titled “Quality in Canada’s Built Environment from Research to Action: Roadmaps to Equity, Social Value, and Sustainability,” authored by Susan Speigel (OAA), Robert Wright (CSLA), and Jean-Pierre Chupin (OAQ). The article detailed the outcomes of the Halifax Convention in May 2024, supported by the SSHRC Partnership Grant. This initiative highlighted critical discussions on two fundamental questions: “What are the main qualities of a built environment that fosters equity and sustainability?” and “What new types of research and practice are necessary to address the specific issues of quality in built environments?”

One of the event’s main outputs was a set of 14 roadmaps designed to guide future architectural and urban planning projects. These roadmaps are intended to steer efforts toward achieving greater equity and inclusivity in the built environment across Canada.

This collaboration among students, academics, professionals, and citizens addressed the immediate challenges and laid the foundation for a more sustainable and inclusive approach to building and urban design. The roadmaps developed during the Halifax Convention represent a crucial step forward in the quest for a built environment that serves all Canadians, particularly those from marginalized communities.
