The initiative, led by Calgary University “Design + The City,” explores how urban design can enhance wellness, equity, and sustainability in urban environments. Central to this initiative is the integration of “People + Place,” which underscores the importance of the relationship between communities and their surrounding environments in shaping urban health and quality of life. The initiative adopts a multifaceted approach that includes case studies, round tables, conventions, and coffee + conversation sessions to encourage discourse between citizens and professionals. It bridges the gap between theory and practice while pedagogical intersections explore the educational impacts of design.
The roadmap advocates for a more inclusive and sustainable urban future in Calgary, raising critical questions about who makes design decisions and whose interests they serve. It integrates inclusive, community, education, policy, and performance to create a holistic approach to urban health.
