Over the last decade, cities have more and more begun to think about their night-times as periods of inequality, injustice and opportunity. This seminar introduces key concepts in the study of the night as what geographers call a time-space, both social “territory” and period of time. Topics to be addressed will include gender security at night, the place of migrant workers in night-time economies, and the emergence of the night as a key time of social protest.

About the speaker:

Will Straw is Professor of Urban Media Studies in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University. He is the author of Cyanide and Sin: Visualizing Crime in 50s America (Andrew Roth Gallery, 2006) and co-editor of some twenty books, including Circulation and the City: Essays on Urban Culture (with Alexandra Boutros, 2010), Formes Urbaines (with Anouk Bélanger and Annie Gérin, 2014), and Night Studies: Regards croisés sur les nouveaux visages de la nuit (Grenoble:  Editions Elya, 2020.)  For many years, his research has focused on city nightlife and urban culture.   He has published more than 170 articles on music, film, and culture.
