Community-Led Pathways to Affordable & Sustainable First Nation Housing

The initiative led by the University of Manitoba addresses the challenges of providing affordable and sustainable housing for First Nations communities in Canada. The roadmap is structured around four roundtable events, each focusing on different aspects of housing quality and lived experiences. The first roundtable explored the barriers to quality housing in First Nations, including issues related to colonialism, societal privilege, and externally imposed quality prescriptions. The second roundtable participants shared their lived experiences with housing and the impact of modern challenges on community cohesion. The third roundtable focused on integrating Indigenous knowledge, design innovation, and climate action, and the fourth roundtable addressed the housing needs of Northern First Nations communities. This roadmap reflects a holistic approach to housing that respects Indigenous traditions and prioritizes community engagement.
